Thermal Insulation Image

Nansulate® Thermal Testing Information:

Nansulate® coatings are a patented insulation technology that incorporates a nanocomposite called Hydro-NM-Oxide, a product of nanotechnology. This material is documented as having one of the lowest measured thermal conductivity values. (0.017 W/mK). Nansulate®, when fully cured, contains approximately 70% Hydro-NM-Oxide and 30% acrylic resin and performance additive.

Thermal conductivity, k, is the intensive property of a material that indicates its ability to conduct heat. The lower the thermal conductivity number, the better the insulator. The low thermal conductivity of Nansulate® and the nanomaterial contained in Nansulate® is what makes it an excellent insulator.

Nansulate reduces thermal flow by 34.8 percent

Independent Laboratory Testing

Standard Test Method for Steady-State Thermal Performance of Building Assemblies

(UNI EN ISO 8990:1999 - similar to ASTM C236)

Description: Two wall samples are tested according to test standards for a variety of thermal measurements including thermal flow, thermal conductance and thermal resistance. The sample sizes are 120x120x10 cm (approx. 4 ft x 4 ft x 0.3 ft) and they are tested at a mean temperature of 15 deg. C (59 deg. F). One wall sample is non treated, meaning it is plaster + normal water-based paint. The other wall sample is plaster + 3 coats of Nansulate® translucent coating.

Testing was done by the accredited laboratory Istituto di Richerche E Collaudi - a certifying body for the Italian Government.

Results:

Thermal flow, measured in watts, through the wall section coated with Nansulate® was reduced by 34.80%

Thermal resistance (1/U), measured in m2*k*w1, of the wall section coated with Nansulate® was increased by 28.98%

Independent Government Testing

Nansulate® Coatings were independently tested by Mexico's CFE (Comision Federal de Electicidad, Federal Electricity Commission) to qualify the coatings for their energy rebate program. The study found that Nansulate® coatings provided significant energy savings during both day time and night time hours. A copy of the report can be downloaded here. A press release about the study can be found here.

Nansulate® Energy Testing Information:

Two identical home models were created using 1 cm thick concrete panels. Each house model size was 125x125x125 cm (4.1x4.1x4.1 ft) One house model was left uncoated, and the other was coated with Nansulate® Translucent GP at a total thickness of 200 microns DFT (approx. 3 coat coverage). Sensors are placed in two different locations inside each model. Electrical heating elements of the same wattage are used in both demo-houses for heating and each are place in identical locations. Electricity consumption is also monitored. Ambient termperature is 26 deg. C (78.8 deg F).

Note about cure time. Nansulate® has a cure time of 30-60 days (dependent upon humidity, environment and number of coats used). If you plan to conduct your own studies of Nansulate's thermal resistance, you must allow the coating to cure completely before full thermal abilities will be seen.

Nansulate® has been throughly tested by a number of accredited laboratories, universities, corporations and individuals. Intererested individuals are free to conduct their own testing as they see fit, however please understand that we cannot provide technical assistance on test methods created by individuals which may not be scientifically sound.
